Hey there! It’s Cory Long and I run a Kingdom Business.
What do I mean by that?
What is a Kingdom Business?
A Kingdom Business is “a business that makes Kingdom Impact through influencing change within the community it serves, the people it touches, the industry it is involved in, while bringing transformation to the land. Whenever I tell someone that I run my own business, I almost always get the same kinds of questions.
I think so many of us are brought up to believe that business is for some reason evil…
Or that we must be poor in order to be more righteous…
So many of us carry the belief that business is NOT one of the traditional ways to bring glory to God…
Because a lot of people make the mistake of keeping Business and God separate.
Or worse, they only turn to Him for help when they find themselves facing a challenge or roadblock that requires His wisdom and guidance.
Here’s the thing though…
God wants to be part of your business!
Now, of course that does not mean to ask him for wealth and abundance — I do not advocate the prosperity gospel or anything similar.
But where we can lean on Him for help is to keep us focused on the things that matter most.
Helping others. Providing for our families. Giving back to our churches.
And I think the solution is to simply invite God into your business from the start.
Admit to Him that we need His help in staying true to the mission we first set out on…
And let Him show us how to use business as nothing more than a vehicle to become better servants.
With that, I want to share some of my favorite Bible verses that have helped me along my journey of building a Kingdom business.
Let’s get started…
1. “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Jesus Christ you are serving.“ (Colossians 3:23-24)
When the Lord is the boss, owner, and CEO of your business… there is no room to cut corners!
He expects that we use our gifts to the best of our ability at every moment of the day — as doing otherwise would be wasteful.
We all have immense potential to do great things, and He wants you to live up to that potential!
Yes — sometimes things can get hard. Sometimes we feel tired and unmotivated.
But remember the reward we stand to receive from fighting through those tough moments and working hard to please the Lord God.
2. “Then the LORD replied: “Write down the revelation and make it plain on tablets so that a herald may run with it.” (Habakkuk 2:2)
One thing I recommend to all my students is to get clear on why you want to start a business… and then write that answer down!
As simple as it sounds, writing things down will give you an extra bit of clarity over what your goals are and how you want to go about accomplishing them.
Besides… I don’t know about you, but my memory seems to be fading as time goes on…
So writing things down helps me make sure I don’t lose any of the valuable thoughts and ideas He passes down to me!
3. “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” (Romans 8:28)
Do you know who the most successful business owners I know are?
Those who let God run the business and dedicate their work to building the kingdom.
Being able to dedicate our time, money, and efforts to a greater purpose almost feels like a superpower sometimes!
Keeping the Lord in our hearts with everything we do gives us the strength to see our goals through: and non-believers simply do not have this kind of strength to draw on.
And we must remember that everything He puts us through — the ups, the downs, and everything in between…
None of this is wasteful, no matter how great our pain might feel in the moment.
Trust that it’s all part of His plan to glorify us in eternity… and use this to guide you through not just your business, but in all aspects of life here on earth.
4. “Whoever watches the wind will not plant; whoever looks at the clouds will not reap.” (Ecclesiastes 11:4)
There’s no way around it: when it comes to business and entrepreneurship, sometimes we need to just take a leap of faith.
There will never be a “perfect time” to get started, no matter how much we wish there was.
Often times it’s better to get started today — even if you only have 5 minutes to spare!
You’d be surprised how impactful those 5 minutes can be versus waiting for tomorrow, next month, or next year.
Sometimes we simply have to jump into the unknown and trust that He will be there to guide us!
5. “For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.” (2 Timothy 1:7)
These qualities God gives us are exactly what’s needed to succeed in business:
The power & strength to stay focused and persistent — even during tough times that make us question what we’re doing…
A sense of love for others that guides us to running a business that improves the lives of others…
And a sense of self-discipline that leads us to putting in the work even when we’re feeling tired, distracted, or unmotivated.
These are amazing qualities that God gives us — so don’t forget to use them!
